Mouserat come into the Allegany County Animal Shelter as a tiny kitten. I brought him home to foster because he was SO sweet and it looked like there was "something wrong with his eyes". A quick vet visit revealed some unsettling things. Mouserat has a birth defect called eyelid agenesis, which means he was born without upper eyelids. That means the fur above his eye is constantly rubbing his cornea, and he isn't able to blink, which also makes his eyes dry out. The vet says that without treatment by a veterinary opthamologist, he will lose his eyes in the next 2-3 years. His treatment will require a few steps. First, a visit to a specialist to figure out what course of treatment would be best. Next, cryosurgery to freeze away the hairs that are causing the corneal damage. Last, he will most likely need reconstructive surgery to create a small upper eyelid so he can blink. Mouserat also has a hilarious little kitten overbite, and to top it all off, an unusually tiny anus. Wow. Poor little guy. Despite all that, he has a HUGE personality, and purrs like a lion! Please spread the word, and consider helping us raise the funds to get this boy the treatment he needs!
